The first night on our maiden voyage with our new camper was at Fulton, MO. We were the only rig in a nice campground, Hidden Oaks CG, in a wooded rural setting.
We drove on into Hannibal on Friday and stayed at Mark Twain Cave and Campground.
While walking the streets of Hannibal, one can just visualize Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn scurrying along the streets on their way to their next adventure.
You can almost see Tom here by the picket fence next to Mark Twain’s house trying to talk other people into painting it for him.
Across the street is Becky Thatcher’s house. It is awaiting more funds for a complete renovation.
Around the corner is Huck Finn’s modest home.
The law offices of Samuel Clemen’s (Mark Twain) father are up the street from Becky Thatcher’s house. His father was never successful and died when Sam was eleven years old. To help his family make ends meet he was apprenticed to a printer.
Except for the paved streets and automobiles, the street front looks much the same as it did in Mark Twain’s time. We would have spent more time exploring the town but with temperatures in the upper nineties it was oppressive. We viewed the interesting exhibits in the air conditioned museum and then headed back to enjoy our new home.
